An on-device model turns the illustration into a numeric fingerprint. It reads the picture rather than the text, so foil stamping, glare on the title or a worn edge does not matter.
The MetaZoo database downloads once and lives on your phone, so the match comes back in about a second with no connection at all — the state you are usually in at a card shop.
